LowerMyBills is owned by Experian Company, one of the "big three" credit bureaus. They specialize in home loans, especially refi's, but also broker loans for purchasing new homes, home equity loans, construction loans, auto loans and auto refinances, plus debt consolidation loans for those with no homes. They provide a list of quotes from various lenders, similar to other reputable companies in this genre. LowerMyBills also serves those who want to lower their bills in additional categories such as credit cards, long distance phone service, cell phone service, internet service, insurance, and other monthly expenses. It is a one-stop-shop for those who want to, well, lower their bills. LowerMyBills also features BillPay, a free online bill pay service. Despite being owned by a very large company, LowerMyBills has not lost its focus on customer service. Website design is excellent, not too busy, and well organized |
5 Minute Auto Loan is another loan service that provides quotes from a number of lenders, but specializes in auto loans. They cater to those with all types of credit, good to bad, but are mostly geared to those who have a problem obtaining a traditional car loan. The 5MinuteAutoLoan website is well designed and simple. Big buttons on every page get you to the form which is filled out to start the process. Note that they use local auto finance centers so the service is more personalized. They have a page of instruction on how to "Re-establish Your Credit" which is a helpful guide, urging you know your credit score beforehand, have realistic expectations (you won't get a great loan this time, but once you establish decent credit by this process, you are on the way), expect that you will have a down payment, make sure you can afford the payment, warnings against credit life and unemployment insurance products, and to come prepared when you visit the lender, bringing the proper documentation, and other good common sense tips.

ProStores ProStores is an eBay company which helps businesses and individuals create web stores. Their basic package provides a customizable e-commerce solution which includes a store front with website hosting (up to 5GB) with an easy to use webbuilder, a shopping cart, and real time credit card payment processing which also accepts PayPal. Note that this is NOT eBay Stores, explained below - eBay stores is for setting up an store on the eBay website, not a standalone website in its own domain like ProStore provides. ProStores also has two other levels, Advanced and Enterprise, which can handle increasing amounts of products and website traffic and sales, and they provide additional tools for promotions and vendor management. Besides the monthly fee for the ProStore, a successful transaction fee is charged, which is currently 0.50%. Discounts are provided for businesses that also have an eBay Store. See below. |
Logoworks is a professional logo design firm. They produce logos that can be used on websites, business cards, brochures, and stationery, and offers some printing services, too. They advertise a fast turnaround, in as little as 3 days. To get to the pricing matrix, look for the "Pricing & Packaging" selection on the far right side of the second row of the top menu bar. Prices currently start at $300 for the design only which includes 2 designers to work on your project, 4 logo concepts, and 2 revision rounds. The next level at $400 provides unlimited revision rounds with more designers and concepts and is recommended if you have a hard time making up your mind. Medium service levels include letterhead, business card, and envelope design, and the higher levels throw in 500 business cards for free, with the highest level, currently $1500, including some website design. Logo Jeez, a less established logo design firm, offers lower pricing than Logoworks, plus a good bit more for the money, but does not yet have an impressive gallery of existing works as does Logoworks. Another option is a do-it-yourself logo from LogoMaker. It is free to use the excellent Logo Maker design tool to see what kind of templates they offer and how the final product would look on screen and if this is satisfactory, it only costs $50. The LogoMaker design tool takes a couple of minutes to learn how to use but is simple, powerful, and even fun to use. |
eBay Stores is a service for those who want to host a store on eBay. Unlike ProStores detailed above, eBay Stores are located on the eBay website, not on a standalone website. The price for an eBay store starts at about half that of a ProStore, with an eBay Store currently $16 per month for the basic package which includes up to 5 custom pages and 300 store categories. eBay Stores is a subset of the normal eBay website, with the same good design. The introductions, instructions, and details provided for explaining the Stores is the same as that for those who already have a store - it is less of a pitch and more of just providing useful information, except for the left-bar menu item, "Why Open a Store" which does have a short summary of the benefits, and the main one, "75% of eBay Stores sellers surveyed said that opening an eBay Store increased their sales." |
Office Depot is the large office supply store with many brich-and-mortar stores throught the US. Besides consumable office supplies, Office Depot has a large selection of office furniture and business technology tools, and is used as much by those with a home office as those with larger businesses. Office Depot's website is very good, and with their large selection the search function works well with narrowing by price and brand, but with only a limited display of category and search results which makes paging through the many results tedious, except that they offer the useful ability to sort the results by price and brand. Pricing is at or near list except on sale items,

MerchantCircle is a service for local business owners to manage and build their reputation on the web, which sounds pretty esoteric, and unless you dig into the, at first glance, very simple website you will still be in the dark. Merchant Circle is really a marketing service for small businesses, providing links with other businesses in the Circle to create a referral network. They also provide tools to manage and monitor contact information and company reviews as well as boost search engine placement, create and distribute coupons, start a business-related blog, plus features an Ad Wizard to help create ads which will appear on the Merchant Circle network. To merely enter your business listing in the MerchantCircle network is free. Note that this service is really for "hard" businesses who have a physical presence, not businesses that have an internet only presence. |

Annual Credit Report is the REAL place to get a free credit report. Note that this is NOT the heavily advertised freecreditreport.com, which gives you a free credit report only when you sign up with an expensive credit monitoring service. As Clark Howard recommends, the best thing to do with Annual Credit Report is to get a report from one of the three services (you choose which one or all three when you are getting the report) every four months, so that your credit can be checked three times per year for free. Put it on your calendar.
